"Before taking my current position at Yale University, I was the academic dean and director of a doctoral program in homiletics at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, USA. During that time, I invited Jan Chr. Vaessen to come as a guest lecturer and professor. He taught both masters and doctoral level students. In addition to hearing him preach, deliver lectures and lead seminars, I reviewed the teaching evaluations from students who studied with him. I also have known him through the international guild of homiletic theologians (Societas Homiletica), and we have had extensive scholarly conversations over the last seventeen years.
Every evaluation of Jan Chr. Vaessen leads to the same conclusion: he is an outstanding speaker and teacher. He takes a deep interest in his students. He listens with care, and has the conceptual and practical knowledge needed to help them speak and communicate much more effectively. Many of the students at Iliff urged us to appoint him to the faculty permanently, and if there had been a position open in his field at Iliff, I would have urged the faculty to hire him because of the way he combines intellectual depth with a keen psychological sense about people and how to teach them.
I also found him to be a fine colleague, someone who was well read and ready to enter into sustained conversation about a wide range of topics related to public speaking, interpreting texts, theology and spirituality. One of the finest characteristics of Jan Chr. Vaessen is his ability to state clearly what he believes and thinks, while treating with respect those who see things differently.
